Iran’s FM: Too Early for IAEA to Join Negotiations
WANA (Apr 19) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said it is still too early for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to become directly involved in the ongoing negotiations, despite the presence of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in Rome.
Araghchi emphasized the IAEA’s technical role in overseeing Iran’s nuclear program but clarified that the talks have not yet reached a stage that would require the agency’s formal involvement.
“The Agency will certainly be part of this process and will have an important role to play,” he said. “Mr. Grossi’s presence is useful, but not within the talks themselves—not yet, because we haven’t reached a point where it’s necessary.”
Araghchi underlined the IAEA’s central role in verifying any potential agreement involving Iran’s nuclear commitments.
“It is natural that the Agency will play a key role in any possible agreement, as it is responsible for verification and monitoring. We do not recognize any other body for verification in this area,” he stated.
He reiterated that Iran is not currently in a position that requires the IAEA’s direct participation, but left the door open to technical consultation.
“Of course, from time to time during negotiations, the Agency’s expert opinions can be helpful. In the past as well, during talks, we occasionally invited IAEA experts or held consultations with the Director General,” Araghchi added.
As the second round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States started today in Italy, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, also announced his presence in Rome, which caused speculation about his involvement in the ongoing indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States.
